An organisation of our size traditionally has between 4 and 6 voluntary trustees contributing their time, skills, and expertise without financial compensation.
Collectively they set strategic direction and make key decisions about activities and policies whilst ensuring the charity is well-managed and operates transparently.
They share equal legal responsibility for overseeing the charity’s management and administration, ensuring funds are used appropriately and effectively to achieve the organisations aims and objectives.
ESSENTIAL
1. Passion for the Arts: A genuine interest in theatre and the arts is crucial. Trustees should be enthusiastic about the charity’s mission and goals.
2. Strategic Thinking: The ability to think strategically and contribute to the long-term planning and vision of the charity is vital.
3. Commitment: Trustees should be willing to dedicate time and effort to attend meetings, participate in events, and support the charity’s activities.
4. Team Player: Good trustees work well with others, respecting diverse opinions and collaborating effectively with fellow board members and staff.
5. Integrity and Accountability: Trustees must act with integrity, ensuring transparency and accountability in all their actions and decisions.
6. Networking Skills: The ability to build and leverage networks can help in fundraising, partnerships, and raising the charity’s profile.
DESIRABLE
7. Relevant experience in areas such as finance, law, fundraising, marketing, or arts management can be invaluable. Trustees with a background in theatre production or education can also provide much needed insights.
8. Understanding of charity governance or a willingness to learn, including legal and regulatory requirements, is extremely useful to ensure compliance and effective oversight.
Generally, trustees can expect to dedicate between 10 and 20 hours per month to their role.
This includes attending regular board meetings, which typically occur once a month and last for about two to three hours.

In addition to meetings, trustees may also spend time on other activities such as:
Preparing for meetings:
Reviewing documents and reports.
Participating in sub-committees:
Focusing on specific areas like finance, fundraising, or marketing.
Attending events: Supporting the charity by attending performances, fundraisers, and community events.
Volunteering: Helping with various tasks and initiatives as needed.
The exact time commitment can depend on the charity’s size, complexity, and specific needs at any given time. It’s important for trustees to be flexible and willing to contribute additional time during busy periods or when special projects arise.
