About Phil Willmott and The REP

Growing up in a working-class suburb of Bristol Phil's future options seemed limited until he discovered he could go and see plays at the Bristol Old Vic at pocket money prices. The stories from other cultures, times and places he saw performed there inspired a 30-year multi-award-winning international career in acting, writing and directing. So every year he takes time out to create at least one piece of similarly affordable and accessible theatre to fire the imagination of others from low-income backgrounds. Sometimes this work is supported and well paid for everyone involved. At other times there’s no funding at all to pay himself or anyone else but he does it anyway and is shameless in approaching others to invest their spare time in making theatre for new audiences.
